Daniel lived during the Babylonian exile and remained steadfast in his faith even during the destruction of the First Temple in 586 B.C.E.  For refusal to worship the king’s image he and his three friends (top third – white bars) are thrown into a fiery furnace but survive unharmed.  Daniel was thrown into a den of lions and left untouched.  Babylonians permitted King Darius to return in 536 B.C.E.

Ezra the scribe and religious leader who maintained Jewish identity is expressed in the middle panel showing the path leading the way.  Nehemiah was the political leader.  The bottom panel represents the rebuilt temple, creation anew of Torah including in the center, renewal of worship and sacrifice surrounded by the new wall Nehemiah built around Jerusalem.
